I’ve been playing tracks from local symphonic metal band Selene for quite a while now. Since their formation back in 2013, they’ve been good enough to send the two EPs that have been released through to Rock Radio NI, and a few weeks ago they sent in their debut album “The Forgotten” which gets released on 19th November. I played “Dorian”, the opening track from the album on the Friday NI Rocks Show a few weeks ago and “Paradise Over” (which was also on an earlier EP) is included on the Show this week. The band released “Never Ending Silence” as the first single from the album in September.

Selene’s debut EP “Among The Frozen” was released in July 2013 and this was followed by “Paradise Over” during 2014. The band was formed by soprano singer Shonagh Lyons and guitarist John Connor, who were later joined by Thomas Alford on bass and Cameron Ashlund-Glass on drums. Alford also performs with local band Sandstone and as part of Tim “Ripper” Owen’s live band. Ashlund-Glass is also a member of local band Darkest Era. Lyons and Connor had previously worked together in the band Gate XIII, releasing the singles “Till The Shadows” and “Once Upon A Time”; both of which have featured on the NI Rocks Shows – the former as recently as September.

Fans of the symphonic metal genre will definitely want to check out this album. The band has been getting some great feedback and reviews of the EPs and new album have all been very favourable.

About “NI Rocks Recommends”

The simple idea behind “NI Rocks Recommends” is to acknowledge and promote some of the great music being submitted to Rock Radio NI. I'll not be giving marks or ratings or analyzing the tracks in great detail; just telling you something about the artist and the album. It’s a personal recommendation, not a traditional “review”!

My musical tastes cover most things rock; from the not too melodic to the not too heavy. The albums that I’ll be recommending are merely those that I would buy myself and which you’ll be hearing played on my shows on Rock Radio NI.
