English blues-rock trio The Brew released their sixth studio album, “Shake The Tree” via Jazzhaus Records on 23rd September. This was one of those albums that I knew I was going to like from the moment that I saw the e-mail appear in our inbox! I’d posted an interview with the band back in February 2014 following the release of their previous album “Control” and preceding their appearance in the Diamond Rock Club, Ahoghill in May of that year. I was highly impressed with the previous album and “Shake The Tree” certainly lives up to expectations. The single “Johnny Moore” is included on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 21st October.

The Brew formed in 2004 with vocalist / guitarist Jason Barwick, bass player Tim Smith and his son, drummer Kurt Smith. The band’s website refers to this being a fifth studio album, though the press release and my own count suggest it is the sixth – “The Brew” (2006), “The Joker”(2008), “A Million Dead Stars” (2010), “The Third Floor” (2011), “Control” (2014) and “Shake The Tree” (2016).  There is also a live album, an EP and 2 DVDs.

The band has once again worked with Toby Jepson on the recording of the album which was funded through a successful PledgeMusic campaign.  There are 10 tracks on the album and whilst I’m only on my third listen to the album since downloading it a few yours ago, it’s clear that they capture the band at their best. All have that infectious sound that no doubt makes them such a popular band on the live circuit; particularly it would seem on mainland Europe.

The Brew embark on a month long European tour on 29th October, taking in Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland and Spain.

About “NI Rocks Recommends”

The simple idea behind “NI Rocks Recommends” is to acknowledge and promote some of the great music being submitted to Rock Radio NI. I'll not be giving marks or ratings or analyzing the tracks in great detail; just telling you something about the artist and the album. It’s a personal recommendation to go check something out, not a traditional “review”!

My musical tastes cover most things rock; from the not too melodic to the not too heavy. The albums that I’ll be recommending are those that you’ll hear me playing tracks from on my shows on Rock Radio NI.
