There can be a fine line between porn star names and the names of some rock band members!!......When that is the first line of an album recommendation you know you’re either dealing with a band of a specific genre from the 80’s / early 90’s or a band that is inspired by the music from that era! In this case it’s the latter, as Austrian band Sergeant Steel are clearly influenced by that era. Listening to their new album “Riders of The Worm” which was released through Boyz Tyme Records on 27th November reminds me particularly of that late 80’s / early 90’s period. That is only reinforced by the knowledge that there are guest appearances from Mark Slaughter and Kane Roberts.

Sergeant Steel formed in 2007 and “Riders of the Worm” is their third album. Their first album “Lovers & Maniacs” was originally released in 2010, then re-released in 2011. That was followed by “Men on a Mission”; released in 2013 by Boyz Tyme Records after being mixed and mastered by the legendary Michael Wagener. The latest album has again beenmixed and mastered by Wagener. It features the vocals of Mark Slaughter on the track “Young and Hungry” and a guitar solo from Kane Roberts on “Silver Spoon”.

Sergeant Steel are Phil Vanderkill on vocals, Jack Power and Chuck Boom on guitars, Ben Bateman on keyboards, Ronny Roxx on bass and Cosy Coxx on drums. The latter had been one of the founding members of the band and initially played bass before leaving the band for a while and then returning as the drummer.

There are 13 full length tracks on the album and a short “outro”. Personal favourites would be “Happy Time (Love On Demand)”, “Dirty Habits”, “Young and Hungry”, “Hot Widow” and “Mr Right”. Videos have been released for two of those tracks.

About “NI Rocks Recommends”

The simple idea behind “NI Rocks Recommends” is to acknowledge and promote some of the great music being submitted to Rock Radio NI. I'll not be giving marks or ratings or analyzing the tracks in great detail; just telling you something about the artist and the album. It’s a personal recommendation, not a traditional “review”!

My musical tastes cover most things rock; from the not too melodic to the not too heavy. The albums that I’ll be recommending are merely those that I would buy myself and which you’ll be hearing played on my shows on Rock Radio NI.
