British melodic metalcore band Bury Tomorrow play the Oh Yeah Centre in Belfast on 17th May and release their third album “Runes” through Nuclear Blast Records on 26th May. NI ROCKS – Thanks for agreeing to answer a few questions for Rock Radio Northern Ireland in advance of the UK tour and release of the new album in May.
You’re playing the Oh Yeah Centre in Belfast on Saturday 17th May as part of that tour. You’ve built up a reputation as a great band to see perform live. How would you describe a Bury Tomorrow live performance and what do what people to take away with them from a show?
DANI – I think we are a band that understand value - whether that’s the value of a ticket price or the value of anticipation before a show. We want everyone to feel involved and go home having an amazing experience.
NI ROCKS – You’ve played numerous gigs and festivals over the past 7 or 8 years. What have been your highlights from all of those appearances?
DANI – Probably Download last year was a huge step for us. It was our first time and probably one of the best shows musically and crowd wise we've ever played, it was a perfect day.
NI ROCKS – Your third studio album “Runes” is released this month, again through Nuclear Blast records. Can you tell us a little about the writing of this album, where it was recorded and who was involved in production etc?
DANI – It came together really easily. Our newest edition Kristan went into preproduction with Jacko our drummer and hashed out some ideas for songs. We then got to the practice side of things and formulated full tunes. We recorded with Mike Curtis which was a dream, he recorded the first Lionheart single so we new he'd do a great job. It was then mastered and mixed by Will Putney in the States. The whole thing was a positive experience.
NI ROCKS – The band is quoted as stating that the new album is more “old school” than the previous album “The Union of Crowns” released in 2012. Music journalists seem to have an unusual fascination with labels. How would you describe the music on the new album?
DANI – I just think generally it's harking back to the bands we grew up listening to, it's not too different from our old style just a little more riffy.
NI ROCKS – I read somewhere that the title of the album is refers to the runic language system and that the various descriptors of those symbols influences each of the tracks. What was the inspiration behind the use of the runes?
DANI - I mean generally runes are everywhere at the moment in clothing or TV shows so it didn't just 'come' to me but I thought it was a rad name and then did some research into each meaning and they now all link literally or metaphorically with each track.
NI ROCKS – You’ve released the track “Watcher” back in January and then the video for “Man On Fire” in February. Both tracks have been very well received. Would you see those tracks as being reflective of the style and sound of the new album as a whole?
DANI – I think they are pretty much the album in two tracks. I mean there are some hidden surprises and gems but they best show off our metal and melodic sides.
NI ROCKS – Have you decided upon which track might be the third single to be released and are there plans for further videos?
DANI – We released a live music video of the track "Of Glory" recently which was also really well recieved but we have a new single in mind to come out round download.
NI ROCKS – You’ve the UK tour in May. Are there plans for tours of Europe and the USA in the near future? Have you been able to make inroads into the N American market and are there plans to expand further into that area?
DANI – We've been to the USA 3 times back in 2010. It's honestly all about logistics. We have some tour announcements coming out of shows further a field so watch out for them.
NI ROCKS – Who were your musical influences when you started the band back in 2006 and have those changed over the years?
DANI – Killswitch Engage, Still Remains, Darkest Hour, At The Gates - all the metalcore metal legends. I think we've just learned to appreciate the new generation of metalcore bands people like Parkway Drive, While She Sleeps.
NI ROCKS – Finally, a couple of quick questions that we like to ask those we’re interviewing. What artists are we likely to find if we hit shuffle on your iPod / phone?
DANI – La Dispute, He Is Legend and probably ASAP Rocky haha
NI ROCKS – And what was the first band you saw in concert and first album you bought?
DANI – I saw Sikth and Pitch Shifter at Portsmouth pyramids. And Sepultura “Roots” was the first album I bought .
NI ROCKS – Thanks very much for taking the time to answer a few questions. Best of luck with the tour and album launch. We look forward to catching you in Belfast on 17th May.
