I’ve posted recommendations for the last 3 studio albums from Magnum, but wouldn’t have counted myself as a fan of the band prior to those. For whatever reasons I never made much effort to get into the albums that the band released from the late 70’s to early 90’s. Over the past few years, I’ve dipped my toe into the expansive pool of earlier Magnum tracks and added a few to my library, so I was interested to hear of the release of “The Valley of Tears – The Ballads” via Steamhammer / SPV on 6th January 2017. There can be no doubt that Magnum have a talent for ballads and this album brings together 10 of those. I played “Back In Your Arms Again” on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 9th December and “Your Dreams Won’t Die” on the Show on 30th December.

I decided last year that I wasn’t going to post a “review” of 2015 and for the same reasons I have no plans to do one for 2016. We’re all aware of the talented artists we have lost in the past 12 months and nothing I could write would add to what others have said. And, as I’ve generally very little time for other peoples Top 10 whatever of the year, I’m working on the presumption that no-one really cares how many gigs I went to or what my favourite gigs or albums were!

What I would like to do though is express my thanks to many people and look back at the past year for “NI Rocks”. In particular, thanks to anyone who takes the time to listen to a Show, read something on the Rock Radio NI website or interact in any way on social media. The latter is increasingly challenging for those running anything similar to NI Rocks; unless you are willing to buy “likes” or pay to increase access, so I really appreciate those who take the effort to like, comment on or share posts.

“The Unrevealed Secret” is the debut album from a band called Eternal Idol and features stand-out vocal performances from Fabio Lione and Giorgia Colleluori. The band brings together a former lead singer for Hollow Haze (Lione 2013-2014) and the current singer (Colleluori since Aug 2015) as well as 2 other current members of that band. “The Unrevealed Secret” was released on 2nd December via Frontiers Music.

“Clown’s Lounge” is one of those albums that you’re a bit hesitant using the word “new” about (like Lita Ford’s “Time Capsule” earlier this year). The latest offering from Enuff Z’nuff was released on 2nd December through Frontiers Music and features 11 tracks that were originally recorded back in 1988-89, but never finished. There is also a totally new bonus track called “Dog on a Bone” that has been released as a single. That track featured on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 16th December.

Diego Reali will be known to many as the guitarist in Italian power metal band DGM for many years. His latest band is called Hevidence (originally Evidence) and they released the album “Nobody’s Fault” through Frontiers Records on 2nd December. I included the track “Dig in the Night” on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 23rd December.

Dario Mollo is an Italian guitarist whose name I mainly associate with Glenn Hughes and their partnership in the band Voodoo Hill. He has also worked with former Black Sabbath singer Tony Martin on three albums and plays in his band Headless Cross. Long before he worked with either singer though, Mollo was in a band called Crossbones; releasing an album of the same name in 1989. He has now resurrected that band and through Frontiers Records released a new album called “Rock The Cradle” on 2nd December. The title track was included on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 16th December.

Just over 6 years ago I posted an interview that I’d done via e-mail with Clifford Hoad from Kings of the Sun (and The Rich And Famous). That was the first interview that I’d done for Rock Radio NI and I’d decided to do something with Clifford because I’d been a fan of both bands for some time, had befriended him on social media and knew there was a lot we could talk about.

There has certainly been a lot going on since then and Clifford Hoad’s Kings of the Sun recently released “Razed on Rock”, their second album in three years. Having done another e-mail interview in 2013, I decided we needed to get something recorded to broadcast on the Show. I spoke by phone with Clifford at his home in Australia on 20th December and chatted for about an hour. You can hear about 45 minutes of that conversation on the Friday NI Rocks Show that is broadcast on 23rd December (at 9pm UK time), along with 4 tracks from the new album. It’s the longest interview I’ve broadcast, but we had a lot to talk about and it was very much a relaxed chat about a range of things rather than an interview constrained by time limits.

The Show can be heard now via the On Demand Player (the Show uploaded on 21st Dec) – http://www.rockradioni.co.uk/hosts/ni-rocks-friday-rock-show.html

Norwegian band NiteRain released their second album, entitled “Vendetta”, on 2nd December.  If you’re into sleazy, hard rock music and have a taste for bands from the current day delivering that 80’s sleaze / glam sound, then this is a band you’ll want to check out. I’m certainly not a mega sleaze / glam rock fan, but NiteRain wouldn’t be at the extreme edge of that genre either and there is plenty I like about their new album. The track “Lost and Wasted” is included on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 23rd December.
