In my previous album recommendation (for the new Desolation Angels album) I was praising Dissonance Productions for releasing albums from some great British bands founded in the 80’s. The same label also releases albums by some great rock bands formed more recently and one example of that is “All Men Shall Fall” from California rockers Kill Ritual. The album was released on 23rd February and I’ve included the track “Megalomaniac” on the Friday NI Rocks Show this week.

Dissonance Productions have a growing reputation for bring us some great music from British rock bands that were around in the 80’s. The new album from NWOBHM band Desolation Angels called “King” is another fine example and it is released on 23rd February. I have included the track “Another Turn of the Screw” on the Friday NI Rocks Show this week.

It’d be fair to say that 2017 witnessed a few changes in the Thundermother camp. Four of the five members left and were replaced by three new members, with guitarist and founder Filippa Nässil seemingly being the only stabilising factor. However, musically the band hardly missed a step, heading out on tour within weeks, playing some great festivals and then heading into the studio to record the band’s third album. Their excellent, self-titled album is released through Despotz Records on 23rd February. I included the single ‘Fire in the Rain’ on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 9th February and the band have just released a video for the track “Whatever” which is on the Show this week.

“Cheated Death” is the fifth album from American band Against The Grain, but their first with Ripple Music, and it was released on 9th February. As I’ve said before, I’m not a big fan of genre labels being assigned to bands, and it seems Against The Grain might be of the same mind as the music ‘press’ seem to have problems labelling them. I’m sure someone will come up with a label to cover a hybrid of speed-metal, punk, rock, doom and thrash! On their Facebook page the band refer to it as “gear-shifting rock ‘n’ roll”. Whatever you want to call it, I like it! The title track “Cheated Death” was included on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 2nd February.

“Conqueror’s Oath” is the second album from American metal band Visigoth and it was released on 9th February through Metal Blade Records. The band has a sound that is instantly agreeable – blending influences from the classic NWOBHM scene and the US Power Metal scene. I included the track “Warrior Queen” on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 2nd February and then “Steel and Silver” on the Show on 16th February.

A few years ago I posted a succession of recommendations for albums by Chicago-based bands. I can’t recall as many recently, so this one is perhaps overdue. The Outfit hail from Chicago and they released their self-titled debut album through Pavement Music on 2nd February. It came to us via our friends at Palmer Turner Overdrive and I played the lead-off single “Soldier Boy” on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 26th January.

The last interview I posted in 2017 was a short one with Hardcore Superstar singer Jocke Berg; recorded when they played Belfast in November – http://www.rockradioni.co.uk/interviews/3244-ni-rocks-interview-with-jocke-berg-from-hardcore-superstar.html . At that point it looked like the new album would appear in early 2018, but the release dates seems to have been pushed back. However, a new single “Bring The House Down” is released on 23rd February. “Raised on Rock” is the fifth album from German band Voodoo Circle and it is released on 9th February by AFM Music. This is the first album from the band to feature new vocalist Herbie Langhans from Avantasia following the departure of David Readman (Pink Cream 69) in 2016. The previous Voodoo Circle albums were always a great listen, and that certainly hasn’t changed. The classic rock influences remain, making “Raised on Rock” an album well worth checking out. I played the track “Running Away From Love” on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 19th January and “Higher Love” on the Show on 9th February.

It’s always great to find ‘new’ (or at least new to me) bands and this week an excellent discovery was Australia band Lillye. American label Eclipse Records have announced that they’d signed the band and that they’d be releasing their debut album in May. Along with the press release I received there was a link to a video for the track “Who I’m Meant To Be” from the band’s self-titled and self-released EP from 2014. After a visit to iTunes, this track is included on the Friday NI Rocks Show this week.

I’ve been a fan of Canadian band Kobra and the Lotus for a number of years and it was great to see them play Belfast for the first time last November. In 2017 they released “Prevail I”, the first part of what initially was planned as a double-album, through Napalm Records. I recorded an interview with vocalist Kobra Paige last August to talk about the new album and more - http://www.rockradioni.co.uk/interviews/3178-ni-rocks-interview-with-kobra-paige-from-kobra-and-the-lotus.html

This month Napalm have announced the release date for “Prevail II” and revealed the artwork and track listing. See the full press release below –
