I had the pleasure of recording an interview with singer Amanda Somerville back in May 2015 and one of the things we talked about was the first Trillium album. She’d indicated that a follow-up album was one of her main priorities and hoped that it might appear late in 2016. In reality, she has been rather busy and the second Trillium album, “Tectonic”, was only released by Frontiers on 8th June. I included the track “Shards” on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 25th May and “Full Speed Ahead” on the Show on 15th June.

Supergroup Sons of Apollo released their debut album “Psychotic Symphony” last October and recently completed an extensive tour of North and South America. Their European tour kicks off on 22nd June and includes a show in Limelight 1, Belfast on 3rd July. The band features Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater on drums, Derek Sherinian from Black Country Communion and previously Dream Theater on keyboards, Jeff Scott Soto from W.E.T. and formerly Journey on vocals, Billy Sheenan from Mr Big on bass and Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal on guitar.

Bumblefoot is probably best known for his time in Guns n Roses, but he was also involved in another ‘supergroup’, Art of Anarchy, and has released many solo albums. I spoke to Bumblefoot via Skype on 20th June while he was in London preparing for the European tour. We chatted for about 35 minutes about Sons of Apollo, the new album, Art of Anarchy, his solo work and much more. That interview can be heard on the Friday NI Rocks Show for 22nd June along with tracks from Sons of Apollo, Art of Anarchy, Guns n Roses and his latest solo album - http://www.rockradioni.co.uk/hosts/ni-rocks-friday-rock-show.html (the show uploaded on 20th June)

“Hymn of the Cosmic Man” is the second album from Belgian band Fire Down Below and it was released via Ripple Music on 8th June. Fire Down Below are a stoner rock band and that’s a genre I don’t feature that often, but something about this album just clicked with me. I included the tracks “Saviour of Man” on the NI Rocks A-Z Show on 15th May and “Ascension” on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 8th June.

“Turning Point” is the debut album from Italian band Nereis and it was released via Eclipse Records on 8th June. As soon as I’d checked out the e-mail from Eclipse last week and took a listen to the album I liked what I heard and downloaded the tracks. Stupidly, I forgot to add them to my music player so I haven’t included any tracks on the Friday NI Rocks Show yet, but we’ll be rectifying that next week! So far the band has released videos for three tracks – “Breaking Bad”, “Two Wolves” and “Overdrive”.

“Hellhound” is the third album from British metal band Monument (not to be confused with British progressive metal band Monuments) and it was released on 25th May through Rock of Angels Records (ROAR). The band was formed in 2011 by vocalist Peter Ellis and the previous albums were released in 2014 and 2016. Ellis is the only member of the original line-up remaining, although both guitarists have played on all three albums. I included the single “The Chalice” on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 1st June.

American band Mass released their latest album “When 2 Worlds Collide” through Escape Music on 25th May. The band formed in Boston back in 1979 (as Axes initially) and they have continued to perform ever since, releasing albums periodically. This is their third album release with Escape, but the first in eight years, and if you’re a fan of melodic hard rock it is worth checking out. I featured the title track on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 8th June.

“The Calling” is the fifth album from English metal band Primitai and it was released on 25th May via Dissonance Records. The band have been around for 15 years and are inspired by the classic metal bands, but deliver their own brand of melodic metal. Over the years they’ve played alongside NWOBHM legends, thrash and power metal bands and sleaze rockers. I included the track “Overdrive” on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 1st June.

The Lazys are an Australian band who are now based in Toronto, Canada; and “Tropical Hazards” is their new album which was released on 4th May via Golden Robot Records. Thankfully an e-mail from BJF Media alerted me to the release as the album is one of those that I liked from the moment I gave it a listen! I included the opening track and lead single “Nothing But Trouble” on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 8th June.
