“Speedway” is the debut album from British band Blood Red Saints and it was released through Frontiers Records on 4th December. The band only formed in 2014 but it brings together musicians who had performed with bands such as In Faith, Eden’s Curse, Angels or Kings, Lost Weekend and the Gary Hughes Band. I spoke to singer Pete Godfrey by phone on 3rd December to find out more about the album and the band. This interview is included on the Friday NI Rocks Show that is broadcast on 11th December. It is available now via the On Demand Player – http://www.rockradioni.co.uk/interviews/2370-ni-rocks-interview-with-pete-godfrey-from-blood-red-saints.html

The band’s name, album title, opening track and much of the marketing relates to an American speedway team from the 1920s. Godfrey discusses this and more in the interview. James and Tom Martin from Vega co-wrote two of the tracks on the album and the former played an important part in getting the band signed to Frontiers Records. Harry Hess from Harem Scarem was involved in mastering the album and plays piano on one of the tracks.

Members of the band have featured in a number of album recommendations relating to their previous work. Vocalist Pete Godfrey and drummer Pete Newdeck had been members of In Faith who released an album in 2014 called “There’s A Storm Coming” (http://www.rockradioni.co.uk/back-stage/music-reviews/1697-ni-rocks-recommends-qtheres-a-storm-comingq-by-in-faith.html ). Newdeck had also been a member of Eden’s Curse and is the vocalist for Tainted Nation. Bass player Rob Naylor had been a member of Angels or Kings (http://www.rockradioni.co.uk/back-stage/music-reviews/1704-ni-rocks-recommends-qkings-of-nowhereq-by-angels-or-kings.html ). Lee Revill had been a guitar teacher for many years and had been in the Gary Hughes band, whilst keyboard player Irvin Parratt had been in bands such as Lost Weekend and Rage of Angels.

The Friday NI Rocks Show which features Pete Godfrey as a guest also included  three tracks from “Speedway” that were chosen by the singer – “Best of Me”, “Dangerous” and “Pickin Up Dust”.

About “NI Rocks Recommends”

The simple idea behind “NI Rocks Recommends” is to acknowledge and promote some of the great music being submitted to Rock Radio NI. I'll not be giving marks or ratings or analyzing the tracks in great detail; just telling you something about the artist and the album. It’s a personal recommendation, not a traditional “review”!

My musical tastes cover most things rock; from the not too melodic to the not too heavy. The albums that I’ll be recommending are merely those that I would buy myself and which you’ll be hearing played on my shows on Rock Radio NI.
