“Chaos Magic” is the self-titled debut release from Timo Tolkki’s latest project. The album was released through Frontiers Records on 6th July. Tolkki of course is a renowned guitarist, songwriter and producer; probably best known for his time in the band Stratovarius from 1984 to 2008. More recent projects include the bands Symfonia and Avalon and being heavily involved in the Russell Allen / Jorn Lande album “The Great Divide” (http://www.rockradioni.co.uk/back-stage/music-reviews/1691-ni-rocks-recommends-qthe-great-divideq-by-allen--lande.html ). Working with Tolkki in Chaos Magic is Chilean singer Caterina Nix, who had previously been involved on the second Avalon album.

Nix had been the singer for Chilean metal band Aghonya and one of the bands that they had opened for was Within Temptation, which coincidently is the band that probably springs to mind when you listen to Chaos Magic. Tolkki had included Nix on the “Angels of the Apocalypse” album after they’d met in Chile and he’d been sent some of her music. Apparently, “Chaos Magic” was written and produced by Tolkki specifically for Nix. I imagine that we’ll probably be hearing more from Caterina Nix over the next few years.

Frontiers released a video for the opening song “I’m Alive” and I’ve already played that track on both the NI Rocks A-Z Show and the Friday NI Rocks Show. Other favourites would include “One Drop of Blood”, “Seraphim” and “A Little Too Late”.

About “NI Rocks Recommends”

The simple idea behind “NI Rocks Recommends” is to acknowledge and promote some of the great music being submitted to Rock Radio NI. I'll not be giving marks or ratings or analyzing the tracks in great detail; just telling you something about the artist and the album. It’s a personal recommendation, not a traditional “review”!

My musical tastes cover most things rock; from he not too melodic to the not too heavy. The albums that I’ll be recommending are merely those that I would buy myself and which you’ll be hearing played on my shows on Rock Radio NI.
