Tysondog was formed in 1983, rising out of the vibrant NWOBHM scene around Newcastle. They released a couple of albums before splitting up in 1987. Many NWOBHM bands failed to make that “big” breakthrough before the genre faded into the background somewhat. However, like all good things, NWOBHM lived on as a music genre – maybe not so “new” anymore and no longer just “British; rising from almost “cult” status to an increasing level of awareness amongst a new generation of rock fans. Some of those original NWOBHM artists from the 80’s are therefore getting a second chance at playing live and recording new material. Tysondog is one such band. Their new album “Cry Havoc” was released through Rocksector Records on 20th April.

There are 12 tracks on the album and all are well worth checking out. I’ve already played “Shadow of the Beast” and “Cry Havoc” on the Friday NI Rocks Show / NI Rocks A-Z Show on Rock Radio NI. Others worthy of particular mention would include “The Needle”, “Parasite” and “Into The Void”.

The new Tysondog line-up features three of those who played in the band in the 80’s – vocalist John Carruthers, guitarist Paul Burdis and bass player Kev Wynn. New to the band are Phil Brewis on drums and Stevie Morrison on guitar.

About “NI Rocks Recommends”

The simple idea behind “NI Rocks Recommends” is to acknowledge and promote some of the great music being submitted to Rock Radio NI. I'll not be giving marks or ratings or analyzing the tracks in great detail; just telling you something about the artist and the album. It’s a personal recommendation, not a traditional “review”!

My musical tastes cover most things rock; from the not too melodic to the not too heavy. The albums that I’ll be recommending are merely those that I would buy myself and which you’ll be hearing played on my shows on Rock Radio NI.
