THE BELFAST DADS ABOUT TO ROCK

The former members of 'No Hot Ashes' spent the last 24 years holding down jobs and bringing up children, firmly believing that their rock and roll days in the sun were well and truly behind them... until one gig in 2013 changed their lives forever.

In a few weeks time they'll be playing the Welsh festival Hard Rock Hell and then supporting Foreigner and FM in Dublin and Belfast, with more gigs on the horizon!

If Hollywood was pitching this film it would be City Slickers meets The Commitments in the mosh pit.

No Hot Ashes were a much loved 80's Belfast rock band that had great potential but luck unfortunately was against them, as guitarist Davey Irvine recalls: "We almost supported  Bonnie Tyler but the story goes she got stung on the arse by a wasp and had to cancel."

At one point they signed to GWR and mixed it with some names, supporting Steve Marriott, Mama's Boys and Magnum along the way, but by 1990 the opportunities dried up and most of the band left London to satisfy their rock and roll frustrations on the covers circuit in Northern Ireland.

They didn't stop being musicians; just stopped dreaming of the big time...until they were asked to reform for a charity gig in 2013.

At the first rehearsal they couldn't believe how easy it was to slip into the old songs.

"There's less hair - but more rock," said Davey Irvine. "And it's great to get back with the guys after all these years. I'm really enjoying writing the new material and I think we've all aged well musically"

And, as singer Eamon Nancarrow points out: "With No Hot Ashes I have always felt that we had some unfinished business. What I want from the reunion, and the up and coming great gigs, is to prove we could have made it given the breaks. Oh yeah and to show my kids that their Da rocks!"

With old crowd favorites such as "I'm Back" and "Summer Rain" in the set the Ashes have also been writing new material and hope to record at least one album before the end of the year.

For drummer Steve Strange, the only member to have carved a successful career in the music industry, it is the songs that makes this adventure worthwhile:

"These tunes have stayed in my head since we split up and I've always felt they needed to be heard by a wider audience. When the band clicked at first rehearsal it made sense to see how far we could take this."

This could be the feel good story of the year and will certainly be a 2014 to remember for those Belfast Dads who are about rock.
