“Chapter 1” is the debut album from Grindhouse who are an Italian band with a German lead singer in the form of Michael Bormann. The album is released through RMB records on 20th March. This is one of those albums that I checked out, knowing nothing about the band, but which I quickly realised that I liked the sound of once I flicked through the tracks. Several of the Italian band-members have worked together in Iron Maiden tribute bands over the years, so that gives a hint to their musical tastes. The band formed in 2013 when they brought in Michael Bormann to provide vocals.

Bormann is probably best known as the vocalist in Jaded Heart, but he also fronts Greek band Redrum, whose album “Victims of Our Circumstances” (which was also released through RMB) I posted a recommendation for back in 2013 - http://www.rockradioni.co.uk/back-stage/music-reviews/1169-ni-rocks-recommends-qvictims-of-our-circumstancesq-by-redrum.html

The remainder of the band are guitarists Stefano Martolini, Piero Ventimiglio and Giorgio Calabrese along with Andrea Cicero on bass and Francesco Missale on drums.

“Chapter 1” is a concept album of sorts, or perhaps it might be better to call it a homage to American cinema.  The band’s name and the track “The Stunt” refer to Tarantino’s film “Grindhouse: Death Proof”, whilst “Titty Twister” is a reference to “From Dusk Til Dawn” and “What A Night” is a tribute to Brian De Palma’s “Carlito’s Way”.

And then there’s the unlikely cover of “Ain’t Nobody” by Rufus & Chaka Khan which works surprisingly well!!

About “NI Rocks Recommends”

The simple idea behind “NI Rocks Recommends” is to acknowledge and promote some of the great music being submitted to Rock Radio NI. I'll not be giving marks or ratings or analyzing the tracks in great detail; just telling you something about the artist and the album. What it isn’t is a “review”!

My musical tastes cover most things rock; from the not too melodic to the not too heavy. The albums that I’ll be recommending are merely those that I would buy myself and which you’ll be hearing played on my shows on Rock Radio NI.
