On 27th January, Frontiers Music released new albums from the front-men of two of the 80’s iconic rock bands. One was by former Ratt singer Stephen Pearcy; the other was from Jack Russell’s Great White. Both Ratt and Great White are bands that have suffered their fair share of internal disputes over the ownership of a name. “He Saw It Coming” is the debut release from Jack Russell’s Great White following a legal agreement in 2013 allowing Jack Russell to use that name whilst the other members continued as Great White. I played the track “Blame It On The Night” on the NI Rocks A-Z Show on 24th January, and then followed that up with “Sign of the Times” on the Show the following week.

The last Great white album to feature Jack Russell was “Rising” in 2009 – also on the Frontiers label. The band went on to release “Elation” in 2012 with Terry Ilous from XYZ on vocals and are now in the studio working on a new album.

Russell is joined by Tony Montana who played bass in Great White in the late 80’s / early 90’s, but now contributes guitar and keyboards. The other members of the band are Robby Lochner on guitar, Dicki Filszar on drums and Dan McNay on bass.

The album has the feel of a classic Great White album and certainly, in my opinion, is a more appealing offering than “Rising” back in 2009. To be honest there are a couple of tracks that wouldn’t tick the box for me, but otherwise it’s an excellent album.

There are 11 tracks on the album – my own favourites would be “Sign of the Times”, “She Moves Me”, “Crazy”, “Love Don’t Live Here”, “Don’t Let Me Go” and “Blame It On The Night”.

About “NI Rocks Recommends”

The simple idea behind “NI Rocks Recommends” is to acknowledge and promote some of the great music being submitted to Rock Radio NI. I'll not be giving marks or ratings or analyzing the tracks in great detail; just telling you something about the artist and the album. It’s a personal recommendation to go check something out, not a traditional “review”!

My musical tastes cover most things rock; from the not too melodic to the not too heavy. The albums that I’ll be recommending are those that you’ll hear me playing tracks from on my shows on Rock Radio NI.
