As a big fan of the band Furyon, when I read that lead singer Matt Mitchell was involved in a new project called Colour of Noise, there was no way that I wasn’t going to check it out. The band originally funded and released their self-titled debut album through Pledge Music in November. The general release through Townsend Music was on 4th December, with promotion being handled through our friends at Rock ‘n’ Growl Promotion. The band has just completed a short UK tour supporting The Dead Daisies, but there were no N Ireland dates unfortunately.

Colour of Noise formed following a meeting between Matt Mitchell and Little Angels guitarist Bruce John Dickinson at the Download Festival in 2012. The band finally took form when Randy Nixon on drums, Dan Lundholm on rhythm guitar and Ben “Silent” Daniel on bass were brought on board. Musical influences are listed as Free, Bad Company and Led Zeppelin and that classic rock sound is evident throughout the debut album.

Interestingly, the press release reveals that the album was recorded onto two inch tape and that the band used vintage and custom guitars and backline. It also highlights that there are no ballads on the album!

For me, the real indicator of how good an album is comes when I have great difficulty narrowing down a list of favourite tracks to as few as five! That was definitely the case with “Colour of Noise”. I played “Can’t Take It With You” on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 11th December. After a bit of work, I narrowed down my other favourites from the 10 tracks on the album to “Can You Hear Me?”, “Head On”, “Heavy” and “Rock Bottom”.

About “NI Rocks Recommends”

The simple idea behind “NI Rocks Recommends” is to acknowledge and promote some of the great music being submitted to Rock Radio NI. I'll not be giving marks or ratings or analyzing the tracks in great detail; just telling you something about the artist and the album. It’s a personal recommendation, not a traditional “review”!

My musical tastes cover most things rock; from the not too melodic to the not too heavy. The albums that I’ll be recommending are merely those that I would buy myself and which you’ll be hearing played on my shows on Rock Radio NI.
