Symphonic rock or metal is another one of those genres / labels that can be hit or miss for me. Sometimes it can be a little too operatic no matter how heavy the guitars are! “Fool” by Darkyra Black is one of two albums of that genre that we’ve received from Rock n Growl Promotion recently that does tick the boxes for me though (the other is by Graveshadow). Darkyra Black is actually the name of the Australian singer rather than the name of a band and “Fool”, which was released on 18th September via Cargo Records, is her second album.

“Fool” was recorded in Athens, Greece during 2014 and features Garry King on drums, Betovani Dinelli on guitar, Fab Jablonski on keyboards and a number of other guests. It was produced by George Boussounis.

“Fool” is a concept album, with the tracks telling the stories of those who come and go at the Fountain of Wishes – a fountain that has been built for kings and queens of the past. The first six tracks relate to the fools of the past, whilst the last six relate to the faces by the fountain.

The track “Who Are They To Judge You” is included on the Friday NI Rocks Show broadcast on 25th September. Other favourites would include “Truth or Dare”, “Bleed”, “The Wish Never Fades” and “Flawless”.

Darkyra Black (Gina Bafile) has now put together an Australian based band to move beyond the studio project that was centred in Europe. This band features Chrissie Mavrifridis on backup vocals/electric violin/keyboard, Dave Lyon on guitar, Dion Italiano on drums, Mario Schmack on bass and Kim Siragusa on keyboard/organ/synth. A European tour is planned in March / April 2016.

About “NI Rocks Recommends”

The simple idea behind “NI Rocks Recommends” is to acknowledge and promote some of the great music being submitted to Rock Radio NI. I'll not be giving marks or ratings or analyzing the tracks in great detail; just telling you something about the artist and the album. It’s a personal recommendation, not a traditional “review”!

My musical tastes cover most things rock; from the not too melodic to the not too heavy. The albums that I’ll be recommending are merely those that I would buy myself and which you’ll be hearing played on my shows on Rock Radio NI.
