Battleaxe emerged from Sunderland in 1980 during the height of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement, releasing two albums before being hit by line-up changes that pushed the band out of the spotlight for a while. The band reformed in 2010 to play the Wacken Open Air Festival and work began on their third album. “Heavy Metal Sanctuary” is released by Steamhammer / SPV on February 24th

Dave King has fronted Battleaxe since the formation of the band and original bassist Brian Smith also remains in the lineup. The remaining members of the band are Mick Percy on guitar and Paul Atkinson on drums. Former Tygers of Pan Tang member Fred Purser has been involved in mixing the album which was recorded in a number of studios in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

A video has been released for title track “Heavy Metal Sanctuary”. Other personal favourites include “Shock and Awe”, “Hail to the King”, “Revolution” and “Kingdom Come”

About “NI Rocks Recommends”

I'm not a reviewer and I certainly don’t claim to be a journalist, but I wanted to acknowledge some of the great music being submitted to Rock Radio NI by artists, promoters and labels. That was the simple idea behind “NI Rocks Recommends”. To be honest I’m not really a big fan of the whole idea of “Reviews” as they just represent one person’s opinion!!  So I'm not giving marks or ratings, trying to categorise bands or compare artists. The albums that I’ll be recommending are merely those that I would buy myself and which you’ll be hearing played on my shows on Rock Radio NI.
